LPG Gas plant explosion in Agbor kills 4 persons with several others injured.
A Gas explosion occurred in Agbor, Delta State ( Osadebe Oil & Gas company Nigeria Ltd.) on the 22nd of January 2021, killing 4 persons and injuring several others with severe burns ranging from 80 to 90 percent burns. The incident was said to have occurred at the Ika-South Local Government Area of Delta State. Video footage appears to suggest that the fire and explosion were caused by the truck that delivered LPG to the plant.
The State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa , through his Twitter handle, expressed his shock and sympathy over the incident and stated that he would work with the State House of Assembly to pass legislation that will prohibit gas plants from being domiciled in densely populated areas.
We think that a proper investigation needs to be carried out by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in conjunction with other relevant regulatory bodies, to ascertain the cause of the incident.
There would be learning points from the investigation, as we already have guidelines set by the DPR for the setting up of an LPG plant. Were the guidelines adhered to? Was the truck hauling the LPG fit for use, what safety measure was put in place? Is the plant licensed to sell LPG? These are several questions that require answers.
