The Decade of Gas Initiative has taken a bold step forward with the official flag-off of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Penetration Programme in the South-East, held in Owerri, Imo State. This milestone event, graced by key leaders including Ed Ubong (Coordinating Director, Decade of Gas), Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim (Minister of Women Affairs), Obongemen Ekperikpe Ekpo (Minister of State, Petroleum Resources Gas), Chinyere Ekomaru (Deputy Governor, Imo State), and Barrister Emeka Mgbudem (Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Imo State), marks a transformative moment in Nigeria’s energy journey.
Why This Matters
For decades, millions of Nigerian households have relied on firewood, charcoal, and kerosene, fuels that compromise health, degrade the environment, and disproportionately burden women and children. The Federal Government’s LPG penetration programme, targeting one million homes per year, is more than an energy transition; it is a life-changing intervention.
By embracing LPG:
1. Families will breathe cleaner air, reducing respiratory diseases.
2. Women and girls will reclaim time spent gathering firewood, opening doors to education and enterprise.
3. Forests and biodiversity will be preserved, curbing deforestation.
4. Households will save money with efficient, reliable cooking energy.
5. Communities will enjoy safer homes with regulated, modern fuel.
Alignment with Global Goals
This initiative directly supports the United Nations Clean Cooking Agenda and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
SDG 5: Gender Equality
SDG 13: Climate Action
With over 17 million households still dependent on biomass, the transition to LPG is a powerful step toward reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding Nigeria’s climate future.
Our Perspective as LPG in Nigeria
At LPG in Nigeria, we see this rollout not just as a government-led programme, but as a partnership opportunity to accelerate clean energy adoption across the country. The South-East, renowned for its entrepreneurship and innovation, is uniquely positioned to harness the economic opportunities across the LPG value chain from cylinder distribution and maintenance to retail supply and safety training.
We believe:
Empowerment begins with energy. Every cylinder distributed is more than a cooking tool, it is a catalyst for dignity, safety, and opportunity.
Jobs and enterprise will flourish. Expanding LPG use stimulates local businesses, creates employment, and strengthens regional economies.
Health and the environment are inseparable. Clean cooking protects families while preserving forests and biodiversity for generations to come.
As partners in this journey, we are committed to supporting the Federal Government’s target of transitioning 5 million Nigerian homes to LPG by 2030. Together, we are building a Nigeria where no child grows up inhaling harmful smoke, where women cook with dignity, and where gas becomes a true driver of national prosperity.
The South-East rollout is not just a regional milestone; it is a national signal that the Decade of Gas is gaining momentum. With strong partnerships between government, private sector, and communities, LPG adoption will redefine how Nigerians cook, live, and thrive.
At LPG in Nigeria, we stand ready to deepen penetration, expand distribution networks, and ensure that every household can adopt LPG safely and confidently. This is more than energy; it is empowerment, sustainability, and progress.
