The Nigerian International Energy Summit commenced on the 16th of April, 2023 and will come to an end on the 20th of April, 2023. We updated our audience about this event about two months ago, and you can click on this link to view other upcoming events for 2023. The NIES theme is ‘Global Perspectives for Sustainable Energy Future’ which has attracted the attention of different industry stakeholders. Considering that this is the official event of the Federal Government of Nigeria and remains the only one officially endorsed at the highest level of the Federal Executive Council. It has thus far been a global platform for stimulating discussions, interactions, and the signing of high-level deals. NIES 2023 has connected 50+ ministers and government leaders, 300+ leading speakers, and over 2000+ senior delegates across 5 days of pioneering industry leading insight, delivering deals and transactions across its conference, exhibition, and elite networking platforms.
Some of the highlights on Day 2 ( Monday the 17th of January) include; challenges of the African Oil and Gas industry, as elaborated by the Chairman of Africa Petroleum Producing Organisation (APPO), Dr. Farouk – Reliance on Foreign Finance, Reliance on Foreign Technology and Expertise and Reliance on foreign Markets (institutions for oil and gas training and technology development are closing down in western countries). Dr Farouk also provided information on what the APPO was doing to proffer solutions to the issues highlighted. Some of the solutions were:
1. Setting up of an African Energy Bank to be powered by AFREXIM
2. Development of centers for technology development and training of expertise; developing regions of center of excellence in different countries in Africa. The association is currently visiting countries with expertise for passing technology and Nigeria has been identified as one.
Other topic of discussion was – How to develop Nigeria’s huge gas resources sustainably and some of the solutions were;
1. Cut taxes
2. Reduce time to approve gas projects.
3. Incentive small gas producers
