NALPGAM SPEAKS ON LPG PRICE INCREASE ACROSS THE COUNTRY

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has called upon the government to take proactive measures to stabilize the price of gas. This appeal was made during the 36th Annual General Meeting of NALPGAM, which took place at the Golden Tulip in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Mr. Abideen Olatunbosun, the National President of NALPGAM, emphasized the critical importance of ensuring gas availability for all Nigerians. He expressed deep concerns regarding the recent surge in gas prices and highlighted the potential consequence of gas becoming an exclusive commodity accessible only to the affluent.

Olatunbosun stated, "The skyrocketing increase in gas prices poses a significant challenge to LPG marketers. The government must take measures to stabilize gas prices and make it accessible to ordinary Nigerians. Failure to address this price surge could result in gas becoming a luxury reserved for the privileged few in our society."

During the event, Ogbugo Ukoha, the Director of Petroleum Regulation at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, delivered a keynote address urging the LPG industry to enhance gas utilization through innovative initiatives and increased investment in infrastructure.

The guest speaker, Prof. Sunday Isehunwa, from the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan, discussed the potential of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria's journey towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. He stressed the need for a significant boost in LPG supply to meet the growing demand and to curb unscrupulous practices by certain operators in the industry.

Prof. Isehunwa also highlighted the importance of diversifying LPG supply sources beyond the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) and advocated for the development of functional refineries, adequate natural gas processing facilities, and streamlined importation procedures when necessary. He concluded that infrastructure development would facilitate greater access to LPG for rural communities, contributing to the country's energy transition goals.
