The Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) has pledged its commitment to spearheading the development of automotive gas and has expressed support for the Federal Government's renewed focus on prioritizing Autogas as a means to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal on the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Recognizing the importance of utilizing the country's abundant gas resources, the NGA believes that the policy shift towards promoting the adoption and utilization of gas is timely and crucial. Gas, whether in the form of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), offers an affordable, readily available, safe, and reliable fuel option for the transportation sector and small generator users. Moreover, it significantly addresses global carbon emission concerns and contributes to environmental well-being.

To expedite the adoption of Autogas, the NGA calls on the Federal Government to revisit and expedite the implementation of the Nigerian Autogas Policy, which was launched two years ago as part of the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) under the comprehensive Decade of Gas Policy and Programme.

Mr. Akachukwu Nwokedi, President of the Nigerian Gas Association, emphasized that refocusing on gas as an alternative fuel for passenger vehicles, mass transit systems, and small generators will stimulate investment, promote capacity building, generate employment opportunities, enhance safety, and ensure sustainability in Nigeria's energy usage. Furthermore, embracing gas as the primary choice of fuel aligns with Nigeria's commitment to reducing carbon emissions, as outlined before global environmental stakeholders in 2021.

"We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to returning Nigeria to responsible and sustainable energy utilization. We are delighted that he recognizes the pivotal and transformative role that gas will play in achieving this policy direction and nation-building," stated Mr. Nwokedi.

The NGA members are enthusiastic about supporting the implementation of the Autogas policy and are prepared to engage in strategic partnerships and enlightenment campaigns to drive its success.

Mr. Nwokedi also urged the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of necessary instruments and regulatory frameworks to address longstanding challenges in the gas sector. This includes market-reflective gas pricing, resolving issues hindering gas investors and investments, addressing gas supply challenges, and outlining financial support programs to facilitate the conversion of millions of vehicles from petrol to gas.

By prioritizing the Autogas initiative and providing the required support, the Nigerian government can unlock the full potential of the gas sector, promote sustainable energy use, and ensure a cleaner, safer, and more reliable fuel choice for the nation.

The NGA remains committed to working closely with the government and stakeholders to realize the vision of a vibrant and prosperous gas industry that drives Nigeria's economic growth and contributes to global environmental goals.
