This report is based on information collected from our online LPG in Nigeria community on Facebook and Twitter. Our research indicates a significant surge in LPG prices across major cities and states in Nigeria, including those that were deemed stable (northern states). Fifteen people responded online to our query about how much they paid for 12.5 kg of LPG in their area, which helped us compile the data below.
The data indicates a widespread increase in LPG prices across 12 states, with Northern states experiencing a significant rise. For instance, Jigawa recorded a whopping ₦11,000 for LPG. In March 2023, affected states paid over ₦10,000 for a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder. Karu, Abuja paid ₦10,500; Bauchi ₦10,000; Jos ₦10,000; Akwa Ibom ₦10,875; Ekiti ₦10,525 and Lagos ₦10,000. Certain states did record reasonably low prices, like some areas of Bauchi ₦9,500; Zamfara ₦8,875; Warri, Delta ₦9,375 and Enugu ₦8,750. However, states like Akwa Ibom and Lagos had the same price, as noted in February 2023.
A comparison of average LPG prices from March 2022 (₦7,618) to March 2023 (₦10,047) shows an estimated increase of ₦2,429 and a percentage increase of 31.89%.
Cooking Gas prices have increased dramatically, and these price hikes significantly impact businesses and households that use LPG daily.
