LPG in Nigeria was at the just completed West African LPG expo and it was indeed an innovative event with discussions on how to develop and expand the company’s LPG and CNG usage. The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector and is calling for private sector collaboration to attract investment and accelerate LPG adoption across the country.
This was highlighted by Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), during the 6th West Africa LPG Expo 2025, held on March 3rd, 2025. Speaking on the theme, “LPG as Clean Fuel for Energy Transition in West Africa,” Ekpo, represented by Abel Igheghe, Technical Adviser on Downstream, emphasized the critical role of public-private partnerships in strengthening Nigeria’s LPG value chain.
A Regional Approach to LPG Adoption
Ekpo stressed that energy transition is not a journey any country can undertake alone, urging regional cooperation to develop efficient supply chains, improve safety standards, and create an investment-friendly environment.
“To accelerate LPG adoption, we are implementing targeted policy interventions, including removing bottlenecks that hinder investment in the sector,” he said.
Government Measures to Support LPG Growth
To encourage investment and make LPG more affordable, the government has introduced several key initiatives, including:
✅ Tax waivers on LPG imports and related equipment.
✅ Streamlined importation processes for cylinders and accessories.
✅ A pricing framework under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to promote price stability and reduce costs.
Ekpo also noted that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (PCNGi) Initiative is working alongside the LPG sector to broaden clean energy adoption and reduce reliance on more expensive and polluting fuels. Also, the government is working on a local pricing framework, which has not been implemented yet.
A Greener Future for West Africa
The Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable energy transition, stressing that collaboration between government, industry players, and private investors is essential to achieving a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for the region.
With growing policy support and investment opportunities, Nigeria’s LPG sector is set for major expansion, paving the way for greater energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
