In a significant move towards addressing a critical global challenge, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and its international partners are convening the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa. This landmark event, scheduled for Tuesday - 14th of May, 2024, which aims to mark a turning point in providing access to clean cooking for the one billion people in Africa who currently lack it.

Co-chaired by distinguished leaders including President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, African Development Bank Group President Akinwumi Adesina, and IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, the Summit will bring together heads of state, government ministers, CEOs, leaders of international organizations, and civil society representatives. Taking place in Paris, this first-ever high-level summit dedicated to clean cooking access seeks to mobilize major financial commitments and foster new partnerships to tackle this critical challenge head-on. President Emmanuel Macron of France is hosting a special session for heads of state at the Elysée Palace on the occasion of the Summit.

In Africa, four out of five people cook over open fires or basic stoves, leading to severe health, gender equality, and environmental impacts. Inhaling hazardous smoke from sources like wood, charcoal, animal dung, and agricultural waste ranks as the second leading cause of premature deaths on the continent among women and children. Moreover, women and children miss out on educational and employment opportunities due to the time spent gathering cooking fuel. To shed light on these human costs, the IEA has launched a new video series featuring firsthand accounts from women whose lives are deeply affected by the daily struggle of collecting firewood for cooking and traveling long distances for charcoal.

The Summit anticipates the participation of hundreds of delegates representing dozens of countries, including over 20 from Africa. For those interested, the event agenda and list of high-level participants are available on the IEA's event page. You can tune in to the livestream of all main sessions at the Summit, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Paris time. For deeper insights into what is required to achieve universal clean cooking access this decade, the IEA's special report, "A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All," offers valuable perspectives. The Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa stands as a pivotal moment in the journey towards ensuring clean cooking access for all, underscoring the collective commitment to address pressing global challenges and create a healthier, more sustainable future for communities worldwide.
