LPG Tanker Explosion Rocks Gwagwa Community In The Federal Capital Territory

In a harrowing incident on Friday night, a truck carrying gas exploded and burst into flames in the Gwagwa community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The explosion caused panic among residents who had to flee for their safety. While the level of damage caused by the inferno remains uncertain, prompt action by the authorities helped prevent any loss of life.

According to a resident who witnessed the event, the truck explosion occurred around 8:30 pm near a location known as Police Junction. Residents watched from a distance as the flames engulfed the vehicle, causing fear and concern throughout the community. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, provided a statement regarding the incident. It was revealed that the truck, carrying Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), experienced a mechanical fault near Gwagwa primary school along the Gwagwa-Karmo road. Efforts were underway to fix the fault when a spark triggered the explosion, setting the tanker ablaze.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, officers from the GWAGWA Divisional Police Headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer, swiftly arrived at the scene. They were joined by operatives from the Federal Fire Service. Their immediate response helped curb the damage and implement safety measures, including crowd control. The focus now is on extinguishing the already contained inferno.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the immediate and remote causes of the explosion. This inquiry aims to shed light on the factors contributing to the mechanical fault and subsequent spark. The public is urged to disregard any misinformation and continue their daily activities without fear.

The truck explosion in the Gwagwa community of the FCT has left residents shaken but thankfully unharmed. The swift response by the police and fire service personnel played a crucial role in containing the situation and preventing any loss of life. As investigations into the incident proceed, it is essential for stakeholders to pay attention to enforcing safety protocols surrounding the transportation and handling of hazardous materials like LPG at the depots and on the road. A minimum safety standard for LPG trucks should be strictly enforced at all loading depots. Measures to ensure public safety and prevent similar incidents in the future should be a top priority for all stakeholders.
