Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promoted the Sanwo Switch To Gas (SS2G) initiative among Lagos Island residents, calling for the use of gas for a sustainable environment. According to him, as a coastal city, Lagos is particularly affected by various human activities and a growing population that is estimated to reach 40 million inhabitants by 2050.
“The growing and often fluid challenges to ensure fair and reasonable use of the environment for all, amid multi-faceted bottlenecks, are a critical concern for state government and a recurring global theme in cities, similar in demographic and socio-economic profile to Lagos State
It is therefore gratifying that the Sanwo Switch To Gas project is specifically aimed at ensuring that emissions from various combustion and other processes that depend on solid and fossil fuels are progressively reduced and phased out. Sanwo-Olu commended LASEPA and other partners for the initiative and various other pilot projects carried out in line with the noble goal of environmental protection.
He said these projects included waste for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, waste for cash, waste for free health insurance, waste for free public transport and waste for food programs, among others. “According to LASEPA statistics, these initiatives have had a positive impact on the environment and have helped improve the quality of life for residents.
“Allow me to also urge communities, schools and places of worship to continue to work with the state government so that, under the watchful leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu, we can witness a true Great Lakes. As another election season approaches, I urge residents of voting age who have not yet collected their permanent voter card to do so without delay and to be ready to participate fully in the upcoming general election. It's a civic responsibility that must be fulfilled,” he said.
Responding, General Manager, LASEPA, Dr Dolapo Fasawe said that cooking with firewood and kerosene caused global warming and was bad for people’s health, as they caused chest infections, and pneumonia and killed people.
“A study done in 2021 revealed that 32,000 Lagosians died from preventable deaths due to air pollution and so this is a fight against air pollution and taking the messages to the grassroots.
“The other thing we’re doing is advocating for recycling. In LASEPA, we say everybody’s waste is somebody’s raw material. We see plastic bottles on the roads that litter the road because the recycling value is not so much
The idea is to ensure that LPG usage is encouraged and fostered in certain rural areas of Lagos state. It is also to satisfy the urgent environmental need for sustainability, the Lagos populace is a large one where the central metropolis like Lagos Mainland, Island and Ikorodu axis are increasingly becoming popular. If the importance of alternative sustainable fuel is not recognized and adopted then accidents are bound to occur. Finally, the Lagos LPG industry can expect to see a significant boom with this endorsement by the government and the governor himself. LPG in Nigeria will report on further changes that might occur as the year unfolds.
