Federal Fire Service Warns Nigerians On How To Prevent Gas Cylinder Explosions

Amid the rising cases of fire outbreaks and gas explosions across the country, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has issued a timely safety advisory to Nigerians who use domestic cooking gas. The warning is directed at homeowners, shop owners, and restaurant operators, stressing the need for better handling of gas cylinders to prevent avoidable disasters. In a statement shared across its social media platforms, the Federal Fire Service reminded the public that gas cylinders are pressure-holding equipment and must be handled with care and respect.

As the agency put it:

“Your gas cylinder is a Very Important Pressure-holding Person, so treat it with respect.”

Key Safety Guidelines from the Federal Fire Service

Using a relatable and conversational tone, the Fire Service outlined practical steps Nigerians should follow:

1. Keep the cylinder upright

2. Gas cylinders should always stand upright. Laying them down increases the risk of leaks and instability.

3. Ensure proper ventilation

4. Gas cylinders should not be kept in tight corners, enclosed cabinets, or poorly ventilated spaces. 5. Adequate airflow reduces the risk of gas buildup.

6. Keep away from heat sources

7. Cylinders should not be placed close to stoves, burners, or other heat sources. Excess heat can weaken the cylinder and increase pressure.

8. Check for leaks gently

9. Rather than using fire or guessing, apply soapy water around the valve and hose area. The appearance of bubbles indicates a leak.

10. Use approved hoses and regulators

11. Avoid substandard or cheap accessories. Only certified hoses and regulators should be used to ensure safe gas flow.

12. Replace worn-out components

13. Old, cracked hoses or outdated regulators should be replaced immediately. Faulty accessories significantly increase the risk of fire.

The agency warned that poorly treated cylinders can become dangerous, noting that most gas-related accidents are preventable with basic safety practices.

Why This Warning Matters

The advisory comes against the backdrop of recent gas-related fire incidents across the country. One such incident occurred at the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Igbesa, Ogun State, where a gas explosion reportedly triggered a major fire outbreak. According to reports, the explosion originated from a mattress manufacturing company within the industrial park. The incident caused thick smoke to spread into nearby residential areas, including student hostels, triggering panic among residents after a loud explosion was heard. Although emergency responders were able to contain the fire, valuables were destroyed, highlighting once again how devastating gas-related incidents can be when safety is compromised.

Our LPG in Nigeria opinion is that Gas remains one of the most efficient and cleaner energy sources for Nigerian homes and businesses. However, safety must come first. The Federal Fire Service’s advisory is a reminder that preventing gas explosions does not require complex technology, just awareness, proper handling, and responsible maintenance. As the saying goes, a well-treated gas cylinder behaves well. Ignoring basic safety rules, however, can lead to consequences no one is prepared for.
