On Monday, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, in collaboration with the Decade of Gas Initiative, kicked off the distribution of free cooking gas cylinders to nearly 300 women in Lagos State. The event, held in Ikeja, is part of a broader government effort to provide 1 million homes with access to clean cooking by 2030.
During the launch, Ekpo emphasized the importance of this initiative, which was approved by President Bola Tinubu out of concern for the health and well-being of Nigerians. He encouraged the beneficiaries to transition from traditional cooking methods, such as firewood, kerosene, and charcoal, to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), highlighting its environmental and health benefits.
Ekpo also urged the women not to sell the cylinders, assuring them that gas would be available at a reduced rate. He reassured them that the government is working to lower LPG prices and asked for patience and cooperation as efforts to make cooking gas more affordable continue.
George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, represented by Professor Babatunde Bolaji, echoed these sentiments, urging the women to make good use of the cylinders and stop using firewood. He pointed out the environmental damage caused by deforestation and the health risks associated with cooking fumes, including the risk of miscarriage. Akume further assured that the Federal Government is addressing gas flaring issues, which will lead to a reduction in cooking gas prices.
Orelope Adefulure, the Special Adviser to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, also pledged support for the initiative, promising that the SDG office would work with the Decade of Gas Initiative to distribute more cylinders across Lagos State’s local government areas.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, represented by lawmaker Ghali Mustapha, praised the initiative, noting that previous administrations had not made similar efforts to promote clean cooking through cylinder distribution.
The Coordinator of the Decade of Gas Secretariat, Ed Ebong, announced that 250,000 cylinders would be distributed annually until 2030. The Lagos event marked the launch of the LPG penetration program in the South-West, with plans to extend the initiative to Akwa Ibom the following day.
