Gas Explosion In Rivers State Not Due To Cooking Gas: 18 Injured In Oroazi Community Blast

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that 18 people sustained severe injuries in a gas explosion that rocked the Oroazi community of Port Harcourt on Sunday evening, the fifth of January. The explosion occurred at a gas refilling shop, causing extensive damage to nearby buildings and leaving several residents in shock.

This incident is the latest in a series of gas-related explosions recorded in the state since 2024, raising serious concerns about safety practices in the handling of gas and other flammable substances.

What Happened in the Oroazi Gas Explosion?

According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, the explosion was triggered by a welder who was repairing a refrigerator at the gas refilling shop.

“The technician was using a gas cylinder to weld while simultaneously trying to refill gas into the refrigerator, which led to the explosion,” Iringe-Koko explained during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

Fortunately, no lives were lost, but 18 individuals sustained varying degrees of burns and injuries from the blast. Victims included both residents and passers-by who were caught in the explosion’s aftermath.

Eyewitness Account: “It Was Devastating”

An eyewitness, identified as Tamuno, described the explosion as devastating, noting that several victims, including a pregnant woman, four children, and a couple, were caught in the blast.

“The explosion triggered a chain reaction, causing other gas cylinders in the shop to explode,” he said.

He added that most of the injured victims were residents and passers-by who happened to be near the shop at the time of the incident.

Following the explosion, many of the victims were rushed to the Rivers State Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

Police Investigation Underway

The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the incident to uncover the exact cause of the explosion and ensure that proper safety measures are enforced in gas refilling shops across the state.

SP Iringe-Koko reassured the public that the police will share their findings once the investigation is concluded.

Recurring Gas Explosions in Rivers State

This latest explosion is part of a worrying trend of gas and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incidents recorded in Rivers State since 2024. These incidents have raised serious safety concerns for both residents and business owners, especially in areas with poor enforcement of safety regulations.

The frequency of gas explosions highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and awareness campaigns to educate both business owners and the public on the safe handling of gas cylinders and flammable materials.

What Can Be Done to Prevent Future Explosions?

Experts recommend several safety measures to reduce the risk of gas explosions in Nigeria, including:

1. Regular inspection of gas cylinders and equipment to ensure they are in good condition.

2. Proper training for gas handlers to ensure they follow best practices when refilling or welding with gas.

3. Strict enforcement of safety regulations by authorities to prevent negligence and unsafe practices.

4. Public awareness campaigns to educate residents on how to detect gas leaks and respond to potential hazards.

The Oroazi gas explosion is a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by improper handling of gas and flammable substances. While it is fortunate that no lives were lost, the incident has left many injured and caused substantial property damage.

It is crucial for both the government and residents to prioritize safety measures in order to prevent future occurrences of such devastating incidents. As the Rivers State Police Command continues its investigation, the hope is that lessons will be learned to ensure safer practices in gas handling and greater protection for the public.

Stay safe, and remember: Gas safety is everyone’s responsibility.
