In May 2025, Nigeria witnessed a notable dip in the average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), better known as cooking gas. This monthly price report, compiled with data sourced from our nationwide community of followers on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and WhatsApp, highlights trends and market behavior across different cities and states. The retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria during the month of May 2025 reflects ongoing fluctuations driven by location-specific operational costs, transportation logistics, and supply-demand dynamics. According to compiled market data from across the country, the average price for a 12.5kg cylinder of LPG stood at ₦15,856.25, showing a modest reduction from April's average of ₦17,500.
States with the Lowest Prices
A number of locations offered LPG at relatively lower prices, likely due to better depot access, local supply availability, and lower operational overheads:
Otta, Ogun State – ₦13,750 (₦1,100/kg)
Ibadan & Onitsha – ₦14,375 (₦1,150/kg)
Ijebu East & Ijebu Ife, Ogun State – ₦14,375 (₦1,150/kg)
These states benefit from proximity to major depots and active gas distribution infrastructure, which supports more affordable retail pricing.
Mid-Range Price Zones
Several areas maintained pricing in the national average range:
Enugu, Abia, Ojo (Lagos), Uyo (Akwa Ibom), Adamo (Ikorodu) – ₦15,000 (₦1,200/kg)
Mile 12, Lagos – ₦15,000
Ibeshe, Ikorodu & Owerri – ₦15,625 (₦1,250/kg)
These areas reflect stable LPG supply chains but are still impacted by moderate cost burdens from transportation and local demand.
Highest Price Regions
Some regions recorded significantly higher prices due to logistics constraints, distance from major LPG terminals, and increased operational costs:
Plateau State (April comparison) – ₦19,375 (not repeated in May)
Kano – ₦16,875 (₦1,350/kg)
Abuja (FCT) – ₦16,800 (₦1,344/kg)
Kaduna, Borno, Adamawa, Ikorodu (Lagos) – ₦17,500 (₦1,400/kg)
Ogbomosho – ₦17,500 (₦1,400/kg)
The elevated pricing in northern and certain Lagos suburbs continues to reflect higher distribution costs and limited supply inflow compared to high-demand environments.
Price Movement Overview
April 2025 Average Price: ₦17,500
May 2025 Average Price: ₦15,856.25
Price Decrease: ₦1,643.75
Percentage Drop: ~9.39%
This decline suggests improved supply availability and possibly the effects of federal interventions and increased local production efforts.
May 2025 recorded a downward trend in LPG prices, bringing relief to households and small businesses. However, pricing remains uneven across regions, reinforcing the need for deeper investment in nationwide gas infrastructure, including storage facilities, transportation logistics, and regulatory reforms.
Stakeholders, especially policymakers and private sector players, must intensify efforts to bridge the disparity and ensure equitable access to affordable, clean cooking energy across Nigeria.
Why Prices Differ Across States
Depot Proximity: Southern states close to Apapa and other LPG import terminals tend to have cheaper prices.
Transportation Costs: North-central and northeastern states pay more due to longer haulage and diesel costs.
Local Demand and Retail Competition: High-density urban areas with more retailers experience healthier pricing competition.
Security Concerns: States with high transport insecurity face added risks, insurance, and delays—factored into retail prices.
Government Subsidies & Supply Stability: Areas with stable supply contracts or government-backed deliveries experience better pricing.
