Nigerians Are Cooking Unhealthily Due To Neglect Of LPG, Says Energy Expert

Many Nigerians are still relying on unhealthy cooking methods, largely due to the long-standing neglect of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by the government, according to energy expert Oladapo Olatunbosun. He emphasized that the lack of access to clean cooking fuels has affected the quality of life for many and has also contributed to increased medical costs across the country.

Olatunbosun, the President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, highlighted the critical role that clean cooking energy plays in daily life. "The most essential aspect of energy for human beings is cooking energy—how we prepare our food," he said. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, many people continue to use traditional, unhealthy cooking methods because LPG has not been made widely accessible.

The consequences of this neglect are severe. Nigerians waste valuable time and expose themselves to harmful fumes, which can lead to respiratory issues and other health problems. Olatunbosun pointed out that the lack of clean cooking options is not just a health issue but also a financial one, as people end up with higher medical bills due to prolonged exposure to smoke from firewood, kerosene, and other unsafe cooking methods.

While Nigeria has significant deposits of LPG, much of it remains untapped or inaccessible to everyday Nigerians. Instead of maximizing this cleaner energy source, the country continues to focus heavily on crude oil extraction, leading to gas flaring and underutilization of LPG.

Olatunbosun’s remarks highlight the pressing need for the Nigerian government to focus on expanding LPG distribution and making it affordable and accessible to households nationwide. This shift could greatly enhance public health, reduce environmental harm, and lower energy costs for families. At LPG in Nigeria, we have consistently emphasized this point. While we acknowledge the government's efforts in promoting policies that support sustainable and clean energy, the real challenge lies in the effective implementation of these policies.
