Nigeria’s gas sector is set for a positive shake-up following the announcement of a major partnership between Nigeria LNG (NLNG) and Seplat Energy. According to reports from Bloomberg, this collaboration is expected to boost gas supply to NLNG by over 12%, offering a crucial lifeline to the country’s leading liquefied natural gas producer amid persistent operational challenges.
Under the terms of the newly signed preliminary agreement, Seplat Energy will supply more than 150,000 tons of gas per month to NLNG’s facility. Effiong Okon, who leads Seplat’s subsidiary managing a key gas project north of the plant, revealed that this figure marks a significant improvement compared to Seplat’s average monthly supply from the previous year.
A Much-Needed Reprieve for NLNG
NLNG has faced mounting difficulties in recent years due to escalating pipeline vandalism and fuel theft across Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. These disruptions have severely curtailed gas supplies, threatening production output and revenue generation.
The partnership with Seplat is only the second time in NLNG’s history that it will be sourcing gas from a third-party supplier, highlighting the deal’s importance in stabilizing the plant’s operations at a critical time. Okon shared that final negotiations on technical and commercial details are ongoing, with gas deliveries expected to begin by the third quarter of 2025.
Why This Deal Matters
The agreement comes at a pivotal time for both companies:
For NLNG: The increased gas flow will provide a much-needed cushion against supply volatility, enabling the plant to better meet export commitments and sustain operations.
For Seplat: The deal unlocks a vital outlet for gas production from its $700 million ANOH gas plant, which has remained idle due to delays in constructing the critical east-west pipeline needed to transport gas output.
Katlong Alex, an analyst at the African Energy Council, described the move as a "strategic convergence of need and opportunity," highlighting how both companies stand to benefit from solving complementary challenges.
A Temporary But Impactful Solution
It’s important to note that this agreement is viewed as a short-term measure until the delayed east-west pipeline is completed. Nevertheless, it showcases Seplat’s agility in leveraging opportunities and underscores NLNG’s commitment to diversifying its gas supply sources to weather current industry headwinds.
While Seplat has made official comments on the partnership, NLNG is yet to release a public statement regarding the deal.
The NLNG-Seplat partnership is a powerful example of how strategic collaborations can help mitigate Nigeria’s broader energy sector challenges. As the country continues its push for energy security and gas-driven economic growth, partnerships like this will be vital in unlocking Nigeria’s vast natural gas potential.
At LPG in Nigeria, we believe that strengthening domestic gas production and supply chains is crucial—not just for export earnings but also for supporting affordable energy at home. We look forward to seeing more partnerships that drive sustainable, reliable gas supply across Nigeria.
