The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is taking significant strides to transform the country’s energy landscape by building 12 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother stations and mini-Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plants across the nation. The announcement was made by NNPC Group CEO, Mele Kyari, at the 42nd Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Lagos on November 11, 2024.
Advancing Cleaner Energy Solutions
NNPC’s new projects are part of a broader push for cleaner and more sustainable energy. According to Kyari, the initiative is a cornerstone of the company’s vision to address Nigeria's energy challenges while balancing energy security, affordability, and sustainable growth.
“These projects aim to enhance the current 1.6 billion standard cubic feet of gas supplied to the domestic market,” Kyari said. He emphasized that as custodians of Nigeria’s energy future, the NNPC is committed to delivering innovative solutions that benefit citizens and businesses alike.
Expanding Gas Infrastructure
The NNPC’s plans go beyond CNG and LNG projects. Kyari highlighted the company’s efforts to expand critical gas infrastructure, such as the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline, a vital link in Nigeria’s gas network.
In addition, the NNPC is forging innovative partnerships with private refineries and implementing a naira-for-crude exchange system. These measures aim to:
Stabilize the naira.
1. Reduce reliance on foreign exchange.
2. Ensure an affordable supply of petroleum products for Nigerians.
Aligning with Government Energy Policies
The NNPC’s initiatives align with the Nigerian government’s recent focus on alternative energy sources. Following the removal of petrol subsidies, President Bola Tinubu has championed CNG as a more affordable and environmentally friendly option.
The government has taken bold steps, such as:
3. Inaugurating CNG as a fuel alternative with a price set at ₦230 per litre from NIPCO but many of our readers state that CNG is at least ₦300 per litre or more in the country.
4. Establishing the Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG) to improve accessibility and promote the adoption of natural gas as a primary energy source.
A Vision for a Cleaner, Affordable Energy Future
The NNPC’s investments in CNG and LNG facilities signal a significant shift towards cleaner energy, with the potential to address the twin challenges of energy affordability and environmental sustainability. These projects are expected to create jobs, expand Nigeria’s gas market, and reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
By prioritising infrastructure development, local partnerships, and innovative policies, NNPC is positioning itself as a leader in Nigeria’s energy transformation. These efforts pave the way for a future where energy is cleaner and more accessible and affordable for all Nigerians.
Stay tuned as we watch how these ambitious plans unfold, bringing Nigeria closer to achieving its energy goals.
