Yesterday, a tragic accident occurred at Karu Bridge in Abuja, FCT, prompting swift action from the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI). The accident happened due to Brake failure of a CNG powered truck transporting cement. At 10:49 AM, PCNGI’s Chief Executive and Program Director, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, inspected the scene alongside officials from the Nigeria Midstream Downstream Regulatory Authority and the Standards Organization of Nigeria, who are conducting their investigations.
In a heartfelt gesture, Engr. Oluwagbemi extended his condolences to the victims and their families while emphasizing the need for greater safety awareness and adherence to protocols at accident scenes. He highlighted the importance of stricter monitoring of articulated trucks, particularly concerning brake safety and maintenance compliance. Additionally, he advocated for an improved licensing system for commercial drivers, one that includes comprehensive safety and evacuation training.
PCNGI’s preliminary findings underscored the necessity for authorities to meticulously investigate the root cause of the accident. Importantly, the organization reaffirmed the intrinsic safety of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles and encouraged collaboration among stakeholders to enhance the monitoring of gas-powered vehicles. A key initiative in this pursuit is the forthcoming launch of the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS), which aims to create a safer and more reliable transportation ecosystem.
As Nigeria continues its journey towards cleaner, more affordable energy, PCNGI remains committed to ensuring the safety of road users and promoting the adoption of CNG vehicles. This initiative is more than just about energy—it’s about protecting lives and fostering a safer, more sustainable future for all.
Mr. Ogbugo Ukoha, the Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure, led a team from the NMDPRA to the site of the accident along the Karu-Nyanya-Mararaba road for a fact-finding mission. The accident was caused by brake failure in a CNG-powered truck transporting cement. Mr. Ukoha informed the press that the Authority, in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders, is taking steps to reduce truck-in-transit incidents.
Stay tuned for further updates as PCNGI continues its vital work in advancing road safety and energy transformation in Nigeria.
