Unraveling The Surging Costs Of Cooking Gas: A Nationwide Conundrum

In a bid to shed light on the escalating prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), our team recently conducted a comprehensive survey across select areas of Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja in February. The findings were nothing short of alarming. Reports flooded in from various quarters, revealing an unprecedented surge in LPG prices, with figures soaring as high as 16,250 Naira in locales like Port Harcourt, Akure, and segments of Lagos. Even in comparatively moderate regions like Ogun state, prices hovered around 15,000 Naira, while the pinnacle of the price hike was witnessed in states such as Abia and Imo, where LPG reached an astounding 18,250 Naira. These stark increases starkly contrasted with our findings from the previous month, signaling a significant economic shift.

Meanwhile, in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, concerns mount as residents grapple with the relentless ascent of cooking gas prices. Observations reveal a notable shift towards alternative cooking methods like sawdust, firewood, and charcoal, as LPG becomes increasingly unaffordable. The current market rate for a kilogram of cooking gas stands between 1,250 and 1,300 Naira, prompting businesses and households alike to adapt to more cost-effective solutions. Vivian Chukwu, a charcoal vendor at the Kpirikpiri market, lamented the steady uptick in charcoal prices, attributing it directly to the surge in LPG costs. Her sentiments echo the sentiments of many who find themselves navigating through the economic repercussions of inflated gas prices.

Similarly, in Nasarawa State, residents voiced their distress over the soaring costs of LPG, highlighting its detrimental impact on daily life. Ibrahim Aliyu, a resident of Shabu community, underscored the stark reality facing many Nigerians, where the basic necessity of cooking gas has become increasingly unattainable. With prices reaching unprecedented heights, households are left with little choice but to revert to traditional cooking methods, further exacerbating their financial strain.

Amidst these challenges, calls for government intervention reverberate across the nation. Residents plead for relief from the burden of exorbitant gas prices, emphasizing the urgent need for policies that ensure affordability for all. The ban on charcoal usage in Nasarawa State underscores the complexity of the issue, as environmental concerns intersect with economic realities. Dr. Kassim Muhammed-Kassim, Special Adviser to Governor Abdullahi Sule, urges swift action from President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the disproportionate impact of elevated gas prices on vulnerable communities.
