In a significant move towards enhancing clean cooking solutions in Africa, Vitol and its subsidiary Vivo Energy have announced an investment exceeding $550 million by 2030. The announcement, made at the IEA Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa in Paris on May 14, 2024, marks a substantial commitment to improving health and reducing carbon emissions across the continent.
Investing in a Cleaner Future
This pan-African investment focuses on developing the infrastructure necessary for cleaner cooking solutions, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) facilities and high-quality cylinders for safe distribution. Additionally, the funds will support clean cooking carbon projects, underscoring the companies' dedication to sustainable development.
A Collaborative Effort for Change
The summit, hosted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the African Development Bank, and the governments of Tanzania and Norway, aims to make 2024 a pivotal year in ensuring universal access to clean cooking. The gathering of global leaders highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing this critical issue.
The Impact on Health and Environment
Russell Hardy, CEO of Vitol, emphasized the broad benefits of clean cooking: "Clean cooking improves the respiratory health of women, children, and the elderly. It empowers women by reducing the time needed to source fuel and significantly curtails deforestation, while also delivering real carbon emission savings. We are pleased to announce our continued investment in this area."
A Long-standing Commitment
Vitol has been a promoter of clean cooking for over two decades, facilitating access to clean cooking for more than 10 million households. Their efforts include the distribution of 2.1 million efficient cookstoves across five sub-Saharan African countries through carbon credit projects and providing safe LPG cylinders in 12 African countries via Vivo Energy's extensive local presence.
Expanding LPG Access
Stan Mittelman, CEO of Vivo Energy, highlighted the growing popularity of LPG in Africa as a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels like wood, charcoal, and paraffin. "LPG reduces CO2 emissions and is more accessible for customers. A key part of Vivo Energy’s strategy is to accelerate the growth of LPG across Africa. We are excited about our recent acquisition of the Somagaz LPG business in Mayotte and our strategic partnerships to expand LPG activities in Namibia and Reunion."
Of course LPG in Nigeria finds these numerous financial commitment of $550+ million investment by Vitol and Vivo Energy to be tremendous as it is poised to make a significant impact on clean cooking infrastructure in Africa. By prioritizing health, environmental sustainability, and accessibility, this initiative promises to transform lives and contribute to a cleaner, healthier future for millions across the continent.
