LPG Price Trends

This week, LPG prices were further hit downwards as both propane and butane prices finished with 13.5% and 9.8% reductions, respectively, on the weekly average price. Butane hit its lowest levels in over a year, touching the 350 range in October 2023. While propane prices closed at an average price of $397.2/MT from $459.0/MT in the preceding week, Butane closed at $375.5/MT from $416.1/MT in the previous week.

Key LPG price insights:

Market reactions from the recent US tariffs on countries globally have continued to drive the bullish trend on propane. We expect a price reversal as the US suspends the import tariff, although the tariff on China remains. China is a big demand source for Oil & Gas commodities, which means, as long as the tariff on China remains, the downward trend may not disappear quickly.

Crude Oil Prices remain at low levels:

WTI closed at $61.50, down 0.79% from the previous week's $61.99, while Brent settled at $64.76, also down 1.25% from $65.58 the prior week. At some point on Friday, prices were $60.09 and $63.37 for WTI and Brent, respectively.

The US-China trade war shows no signs of ending. In a spiralling tit-for-tat of import tariffs, China responded to Trump’s hike by raising its tariffs on US goods to 84%, prompting the US President to escalate further with a historic 145% tariff. This severely strained the trade relationship and triggered a sharp 125% countermeasure from Beijing.

Nigeria LPG depot prices expected to spike soon.

LPG depot prices in Lagos remained at circa 17 million per 20MT at most depots in Lagos for most of the week, but NAVGAS announced a price increase to 18 million by the end of the week. Other depots are expected to increase prices as Dangote Refinery's LPG supply reduces significantly. Price increases are expected across depots nationwide.

LPG Retail Prices steady.

Retail LPG prices showed varying trends within Lagos, selling from as low as N12,000 to as much as 16,000/12.5kg, but generally, retail prices were at 14,000/12.5kg levels nationwide.
