In a move set to reshape Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas sector, the Dangote Refinery has taken delivery of its first batch of compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks ahead of its nationwide distribution of premium motor spirit (PMS) and automotive gas oil (AGO), starting August 15, 2025.

The announcement, made in a statement by refinery spokesperson Anthony Chijiena on Sunday, revealed that the new fleet marks a strategic step in improving fuel distribution efficiency and cutting logistics costs. The investment valued at a staggering ₦720 billion underscores Dangote Industries’ ambition to revolutionise the country’s fuel transportation network.

According to the statement, the CNG trucks, imported through Apapa Port, will play a pivotal role in the refinery’s supply chain. The first shipment was formally received at the refinery’s Ibeju-Lekki site by Devakumar Edwin, Vice-President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Ltd. The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, already a game-changer in Nigeria’s refining capacity, sees this logistics upgrade as another step toward securing market dominance.

While the move promises faster and more cost-efficient fuel delivery, not everyone is cheering. Petroleum product retail outlet owners and the Natural Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria have publicly expressed concerns, warning that the scheme could trigger widespread job losses. They argue that the introduction of a massive, centralised trucking fleet may sideline existing independent transporters and disrupt local business ecosystems.

Dangote Refinery, however, maintains that its fuel distribution scheme will drive down costs, enhance supply reliability, and ultimately benefit Nigerian consumers. With operations set to commence in just a few days, all eyes are on how this bold logistics shakeup will play out and whether it will truly deliver on its promise of a more efficient, stable fuel market, or usher in unintended consequences for the sector’s smaller players.
