Enugu State Bets On Green Mobility: Gov. Mbah Inaugurates 100 CNG Buses, Promises 20,000 Jobs

Enugu State has taken a bold step toward modernizing its transport system and cutting carbon emissions with the launch of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. Governor Peter Mbah inaugurated the buses on Thursday as part of the newly established Enugu Transport Management System. Alongside the buses, he also unveiled five ultra-modern bus terminals at Holy Ghost, Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka, designed to transform the commuting experience for millions of residents.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mbah emphasized that the initiative would create no fewer than 20,000 jobs and boost both the state and national economy. He projected that these projects, combined with other ongoing infrastructural upgrades, would push Enugu State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to $30 billion while contributing to Nigeria’s target of reaching $1 trillion GDP in the next six years.

The governor described the project as part of his campaign promise to deliver world-class infrastructure that uplifts the economy while dignifying the daily lives of residents. He highlighted the affordability and accessibility of the new system, explaining that the CNG buses would reduce transport-related household expenses by over 40 percent. The buses, which are air-conditioned and disability-friendly, will primarily serve schools, higher institutions, markets, and major urban routes.

Governor Mbah also praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating the removal of fuel subsidies, which he said had opened the path for states to rethink and redesign their transport systems around sustainable alternatives. He revealed that the state plans to roll out an additional 2,000 hybrid vehicles in the near future to complement the fleet of CNG buses.

The new system is supported by remodeled bus stops across Enugu metropolis, improved road infrastructure, and a modern e-ticketing process designed to eliminate leakages and manipulations in revenue collection. “Transport remains the central pillar of modernization and a true measure of progress,” Mbah said. “It touches every aspect of human life and shapes the way people live and think.”

Earlier in the event, Enugu State’s Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, highlighted the scale and comfort of the newly built bus terminals. Each facility, he noted, is equipped with air-conditioned halls, eateries, lodging accommodation, fuel stations, solar-powered security lights, and surveillance systems. With the capacity to handle over 10 million commuters annually, the terminals are expected to set a new standard for public transport hubs in Nigeria.

Chairman of Enugu North Council Area, Dr. Ibenaku Onoh, praised the governor for restoring order and aesthetics to Enugu’s transport sector. He particularly commended the two terminals in the Holy Ghost area for bringing employment opportunities and a one-stop transport comfort zone to residents.

Governor Mbah further disclosed that the transport revamp would extend beyond road travel. Plans are underway to develop Enugu Air, establish a rail service, and explore waterway transport, making Enugu a model of multi-modal transport in Nigeria. Safety, accessibility, and dignity for residents, he stressed, remain the priority of all the initiatives.

With the roll-out of the CNG buses, Enugu State positions itself at the forefront of sustainable mobility in Nigeria. The shift not only promises to ease commuting but also offers a glimpse into how cleaner, more efficient energy sources like CNG can reshape urban transport across the country.
