On September 30th, 2024, the Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (NLPGA) made a historic decision, voting to broaden its mission and scope to cover a wider array of energy sources. This shift, approved at the association’s general meeting, reflects an ambitious commitment to embracing Nigeria’s energy future beyond LPG. Now rebranded as the Nigeria Liquefied & Compressed Gases Association (NLCGA), the organization will focus not only on LPG but also on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Hydrogen, Biogas, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
The rebranding was celebrated on November 6th, 2024, during the opening of the 14th NLCGA Conference and Exhibition at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos. The event marked the unveiling of the new association logo, symbolizing NLCGA’s renewed dedication to quality, innovation, and leadership in the West African gas sector.
A Symbol of Bold New Beginnings
The unveiling ceremony was led by Malam Saidu Bello, Deputy Director Gas, who represented the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas). Bello was joined by NLCGA President Felix Ekundayo, members of the NLCGA Executive Committee, and representatives from key industry bodies, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), and the Decade of Gas initiative.
NLCGA’s new logo, featuring blue, green, and orange colors, was designed to symbolize the association’s strategic expansion. According to Joy Shaiyen, NLCGA’s Hon. Treasurer, the colors represent NLCGA’s ambitions to pioneer sustainable energy practices across West Africa. During her speech, she outlined the association’s journey from its early days as NLPGA to its present-day vision, emphasizing NLCGA’s role in driving Nigeria’s gas industry forward.
From Modest Beginnings to Industry Leadership
Reflecting on the association’s history, Shaiyen shared insights into NLPGA’s early years. “When NLPGA started this journey in 2002-2003, the per capita consumption of LPG in Nigeria was only 0.5 kg per year. At the same time, Nigeria was exporting 4 million tonnes of LPG annually,” she noted. This imbalance between local consumption and exports motivated industry stakeholders to come together to promote domestic LPG use and increase Nigeria’s self-reliance in gas consumption.
Since then, NLPGA—now NLCGA—has been committed to training its members and engaging stakeholders to increase accessibility and sustainability in the gas sector. Shaiyen highlighted that this rebranding is not only about a name change but also about positioning NLCGA as a leader in advancing cleaner energy solutions within Nigeria and West Africa.
A Future of Innovation and Inclusive Growth
With the expansion into LNG, Hydrogen, Biogas, and CNG, NLCGA aims to address Nigeria’s growing energy needs with a diversified approach. This expanded focus aligns with Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative, which seeks to leverage the country’s abundant natural gas resources to support economic development, reduce emissions, and enhance energy security.
As the NLCGA continues its journey, it remains dedicated to fostering a dynamic gas sector that prioritizes safety, innovation, and environmental stewardship. The association’s leadership reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a bridge between government policy, industry practices, and consumer needs, ensuring that Nigeria remains at the forefront of sustainable energy in Africa.
This rebranding marks a bold step forward, reflecting NLCGA’s ambition to lead the transition to a diversified, greener, and more resilient energy future for Nigeria. As the association expands its expertise and influence, the NLCGA is poised to play a central role in transforming the West African energy landscape.
Right!!! I'm eager to see how they implement this transition.
