Panic In Zaria As LPG Tanker Collides With Fuel Tanker, Injuring Four

Zaria witnessed yet another frightening road incident on Monday morning when a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker collided with an empty fuel tanker along the ever-busy Zaria–Kaduna Expressway. The crash, which happened around 8:30 a.m on the 11th of August 2025 in the Dan Magaji area, triggered an explosion that sent towering plumes of black smoke into the sky, creating chaos among residents and commuters.

The Dan Magaji stretch is notorious for its heavy traffic and frequent crashes involving large trucks and tankers. Monday’s incident added to that grim record, with witnesses describing a scene of confusion and fear as people scrambled to safety.

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Unit Commander in Zaria, Nasir Falgore, preliminary investigations suggest that the LPG tanker rammed into the rear of the empty fuel tanker. The force of the collision ignited an explosion, intensifying the danger for anyone nearby.

“When we arrived at the scene, it was only the two tankers that were involved in the accident. There was no small car or any other vehicle involved,” Falgore explained. “Three of the injured were occupants of the empty tanker, while the fourth was from the LPG vehicle. All four were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.”

The immediate response of emergency services played a critical role in containing the fire and preventing a chain reaction that could have led to mass casualties. Fire and rescue teams battled to suppress the flames while police cordoned off the area, redirecting traffic to safer routes.

For many residents, the sound of the explosion and the sight of the smoke brought back memories of previous tanker accidents in the area. Alkali Nuhu, a mechanic whose workshop sits just a short distance from the site, recalled the moment vividly.

“It was like the sky cracked open,” he said, standing by a pile of spare parts still coated in ash. “We heard a deafening bang, and almost immediately, flames shot up. People were shouting ‘Gas! Gas!’ and running in all directions. The smell of gas was so strong, no one dared to go near until the fire service came.”

While authorities have yet to determine the official cause of the crash, this latest incident underscores the persistent dangers posed by heavy-duty tankers on Nigeria’s highways especially when transporting highly flammable materials like LPG. It also raises fresh concerns about road safety regulations, driver training, and the condition of vehicles that ply the nation’s busiest expressways.

For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured and the investigation into what caused the collision. But for many in Zaria, Monday morning’s events will serve as another reminder that on roads where tankers dominate, tragedy is never too far away.
