Tragedy In Ibadan: Gas Explosion Claims Lives In Bioku-Alaadun

On Friday night, tragedy struck the Bioku-Alaadun area of Ibadan in Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State when a gas explosion claimed several lives. The incident occurred as a tanker was discharging gas into a retail outlet, leaving casualties that included the owner of the gas shop and others who were nearby at the time.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the explosion and noted that operatives were already on the ground working to contain the situation. He explained that while there were casualties, full details were still being compiled.

According to Akinyinka, the emergency call was received at exactly 19:40 on Friday, November 21, 2025, from Pastor Oyebamiji who reported the tanker explosion. Fire service personnel, led by CFS Adedeji (Mrs.), responded immediately and were deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered that a gas tanker with registration number LSR268YC, loaded with 15 tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), had exploded while transferring its contents into a gas skid tank. The blast damaged two commercial buildings and a residential property. Three individuals were rescued and handed over to policemen from Akanran Division.

The operation was carried out jointly with firemen from the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command. Although the explosion sparked panic among residents, the swift response of the officers helped prevent further devastation.

In his remarks, the fire service chairman urged the public to always observe safety precautions when handling petroleum products. He emphasized the importance of obtaining approvals from the Fire Service, NMDPRA, and other relevant authorities before installing gas tanks or cylinders. Such measures, he explained, are critical to preventing unnecessary explosions.

He assured the community that all necessary fire safety steps had been taken and that an investigation team would be dispatched to determine the root cause of the incident. He encouraged residents to continue their daily activities without fear, adding that the presence of the Executive Chairman of Ona Ara Local Government, Dr. Temitope Kolapo, was highly appreciated during the crisis.

When accidents like these occur, we at LPG in Nigeria feel the need to explain the urgency of safety in the business and at every stage. Safety is important, and we will be exploring this in some other blog posts.

The major risk for LPG is always during receipt into the in-house tank. This is why it is advised not to receive product at night. There was no mention of the capacity of the tank being discharged into as well. Some often try to receive beyond the safety level of in-house tanks.
